ALBUQUERQUE -- The UT Arlington men's golf team concluded play at the 63rd annual William H. Tucker Invitational today with an 11th place finish among a strong field at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course.
After posting identical scores of 11-over par 299 in each of their first two rounds, the Mavericks concluded today's round with a 15-over 303 to finish in 11th place among the 17-team field at 37-over par 901. UTA finished ahead of programs from Nevada, Washington State, UTEP, San Diego, Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State.
BYU took advantage of final day struggles by 36-hole leader UNLV to earn the team championship by four strokes over the University of Washington. The Cougars went 284-302-287 to finish the 54-hole event with a 9-over par 873. The University of Arizona finished third, while UNLV fell to fourth place.
Arizona's George Cunningham led from start to finish to claim medalist honors with rounds of 70-69-69 for an impressive 8-under par 208. He was the only golfer in the field to turn in a pair of rounds under 70. BYU's Peter Kuest fired a tournament-low 66 on the 7,555-yard, par 72 course to finish in runner-up position at 5-under par.
Only eight golfers concluded the tournament with 54-hole scores of even par or better.
Individually, graduate transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) and Tanner Gore (El Paso) tied for team-high honors by finishing in a tie for 34th place among the 100 golfers in the field. The duo each finished at 8-over par 224.
Gore finished second in the field in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.42 over the tournament's 12 par 5 holes. He finished at 7-under on par 5 holes, including a 2-under in today's final round.
Junior Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) finished tied for 45th at 10-over par, while freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas) was the only Maverick to improve his second round score to finish in a tie for 77th place.
Senior Jake Greenspoon battled to overcome an illness that forced him to withdraw from yesterday's second round to finish at a team-low 2-over par in today's final round.
Greenspoon's final round score counted toward the team total. However, since he was unable to finish yesterday he was disqualified from the individual competition.
UTA returns to action Oct. 9-10 at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas. The team will also play in the Little Rock Intercollegiate on Oct. 23-24 before concluding its fall season at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Nov. 6-8 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
