SOUTH BEND, Ind. – UT Arlington shot its best round of the week Tuesday and finished 11th at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic. The Mavericks recorded a 10-over-par 294 at Warren Golf Course.
Joss Gosling closed strong in his first tournament for UT Arlington, carding a 1-under 70 to finish tied for 19th. He improved in each round, going from tied for 51st after the first round to tied for 31st after the second.
Brad Mason shot an even-par 70 to moved up to a tie for 39th. UTA's other team members were Zach Galliford (T64), Marley Sweeney (T64) and Jake Argento (T71). Andrew Cornella, playing as an individual, placed 63rd.
"Both Joss and Brad fought for final rounds of 70 and 71," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "I felt the focus was better. Still too many missed fairways and greens. Our short game has to get better as well.
"I see some better things out there, but there are too many shots we are wasting."
Houston was the team champion with a tournament record score of 847 (-5), and was the only team under par this week. Kyle Pilgrim from Houston was the medalist with a 5-under 208.
The Mavericks return to competition Friday with the first two rounds of the W.H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
