MAVS GOLFERS TAKE COMMANDING LEAD AT FALL CLASSIC
Oct. 1, 2007
FORT WORTH, Texas - - The UT Arlington men's golf team fired an 18-hole record 275 to take a commanding 20-stroke lead after the opening day of the UTA Fall Classic at the Waterchase Golf Club Monday.
The 13-under-par was the lowest scored by a Mavericks golf team, eclipsing the old mark of 279 set at the Ut-San Antonio Invitational in 2001.
UT Arlington can set a 54-hole record with a round of eight-over-par 296 or better during Tuesday's third and final round. The Mavericks lead second place Central Oklahoma and Cal Poly who are tied at 577, one shot better than Missouri-Kansas City (578).
"I can't say enough about the guys' effort today,' It shows all the hard work is paying off. It left me speechless. I told them I was extremely proud of them. We had a lot of guys do some special things out there. Every one is trying to finish in the top 25 to exception themselves. The pins are set extremely tough so par will be a quality score on the final day."
Sophomore Michael van de Venter carded rounds of 68 and 70 to sit in second place with a 138, one stroke behind Central Oklahoma's Colby Shrum. Van de Venter can set a 54-hole record with a round of 67 on Tuesday.
Senior Zack Reeves is tied for third after rounds of 71 and 69 (140). Bobby Massa and Buddy Wilkins are tied for sixth at 141 and Bryce Easton had rounds of 70 and 75 to finished at 145, tied for 21st.
