MG: Mavs tied for third after 1st day in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- A complete team effort contributed toward a solid result as the UT Arlington men’s golf team is tied for third place after the first day of competition at the Little Rock Invitational at Chenal Country Club.

After turning in a 2-over par 74 in the morning round, freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas) improved by three strokes and eight places to finish the first 36 holes in a tie for 14th place at 1-over par 145. He enters tomorrow’s final round just two shots away from a top six finish.

As a team, the Mavericks posted scores of 296-293 to finish the day at 13-over par 589 and are tied with 46th ranked Arkansas State for third place in the 10-team field. Host Little Rock owns the top spot with a 1-stroke lead over Illinois State.

The golfers return to 7,326-yard, par 72 Chenal Country Club tomorrow for the tournament’s final round. The 66-golfer field begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. UTA is paired with golfers from Central Arkansas and Dayton and will begin on holes 5-8.

Junior Camilo Avila (Santa Cruz, Bolivia), playing as an individual, is tied for 18th place at 3-over par. He registered rounds of 74-73 and will open tomorrow’s final round on hole No. 16, along with golfers from Bradley and Houston Baptist.

Junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas) improved by two strokes in the afternoon, posting scores of 75-73 to finish at 4-over par 148. He is tied with senior teammate Jake Greenspoon (Houston, Texas), who turned in 73-75.



Grad transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) went 74-75 to finish the first day at 5-over par 149 and is tied for 29thy overall. Senior Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) is tied for 32nd with scores of 76-74 for a 6-over par 150.

Following the Little Rock Invitational, UTA will conclude its fall season Nov. 6-8 at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif. The Mavericks will open their spring season on Feb. 16-18 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif. The annual Sun Belt Conference Championship is scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Club in Miramar, Fla.
