Oct. 28, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas - Playing in only his second collegiate tournament, freshman Marc Campbell (Southlake) became just the second Texas-Arlington golfer to break 70 when he shot a pair of 69s at the South Alabama/Fall Beach Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala. Monday. Campbell's two round total of six-under-par 138 puts him in a seventh place tie, just five strokes back from the leader. As a team, the Mavericks had their best 36-hole score of the season as they followed an opening round 285 with a second round 281 to sit in seventh place heading into the final round. South Florida is the tournament leader heading into the final day after shooting a 556 and holds a one stroke advantage over Memphis. Campbell was not the only Maverick to shoot under par as both Michael Douthit (Palestine) and Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) are tied for 19th place at three-under-par. The freshman Douthit, in only his second collegiate tournament, showed poise as he fired and opening round 72 and followed it up with a second round 69. Mordt continued his strong play on the season as he shot an opening round 71 and a second round 70. Landon Allen (Corsicana) 76-73=149 and Mitch Boles (Marlow, Okla.) 73-76=149 are tied for 61st place heading into the final day.
