CAMPBELL ADDS NAME TO RECORD BOOKS AT FALL BEACH CLASSIC
Oct. 28, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas - Freshman Marc Campbell (Southlake) did not show any nerves on the final round of his second collegiate golf tournament at Texas-Arlington when he stepped on the Gulf Shores Golf Course in Gulf Shores, Ala. when he followed up a pair of 69s with a final round 71 for a three-round total of seven-under-par 209 and a tie for 10th place.
The 54-hole total by Campbell of 209 ties for the fourth best three-round total in the UTA record books that currently date back to 1992. The total is also only three strokes off the all-time best total of 206.
As a team, the Mavericks shot a final round 292 to drop into a ninth place with fellow Southland Conference foe Louisiana-Monroe. UTA shot a 54-hole total of 858 which marks the fourth best three-round total in the current record books and is just four shots of the best mark set twice, most recently in the 2002 season.
South Florida captured the team championships by shooting a 28-under-par 836 just narrowly defeating Jacksonville St. who shot a 27-under-par 837. UCF's Barry Roof captured the individual championship by shooting a 15-under-par 201.
Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Michael Douthit (Palestine) continued to play consistently as the two entered the final round tied and equally fired final round 73s to finish with a three round total of 214 and tied for 28th place. Mitch Boles (Marlow, Okla.) 73-76-75=224 finished in a tie for 66th place and Landon Allen (Corsicana) 76-73-77=226 finished in 71st place.
The Mavericks concluded their fall season and will return to competition on Feb. 9-10 when they travel to Houston for the Rice Invitational.
