Springfield, La. - Zack Fischer finds himself in a familiar place after the first day and first two rounds of the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate Monday.

The junior has led the Mavericks in each of their fall tournaments in 2009 and Monday was no different as he stands in a tie for third at just two strokes behind leader Andrew Noto of Louisiana-Lafayette. Fischer fired a three-under 69 in the first round and followed that with a one-over 73 for his two-under total.

"Zack has played well all fall and these first two rounds were no different," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "He is one of the top players in the conference and he has a chance to not only win this tournament but also be the top Southland Conference finisher."

That is important in this tournament because the Carter Plantation course will be the host of the conference tournament in April. Fischer was the co-medalist of last year's tournament before losing in a three-person playoff.

"This is a big tournament for us," Rees said. "It gives our players a chance to see the conference tournament course and setup, plus it allows us to see where we are at heading into the fall against the rest of the schools in the conference."

As a team the Mavericks are in sixth place with an 11-over par score of 587. They are eight shots behind first place Rice. In the race for the top Southland team, the Mavs are in third, five shots behind Central Arkansas and one shot behind Southeastern Louisiana.

Bryce Easton is in a tie for 23rd with a four-over 144 while Wes Worster shot a five-over par 145 and is in a tie for 30th. Other Mavericks included Donald Dowie (tie for 38th, seven-over 151) and Bobby Massa (tie for 61st, 14-over 158). Hunter Brown is playing as a individual and shot a 148.

The third and final round will take place on Tuesday.
