PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The UT Arlington men's golf team improved its performance over yesterday, but dropped a spot in the team standings after the second day of competition at the 12th Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
The Mavericks registered a 6-over par 290 to end the day in 12th place at 16-over par after 36 holes. UTA enters tomorrow's final round one stroke ahead of 20th ranked Santa Clara University and Fresno State and two in front of UC Irvine. The University of Arizona and Oregon State are tied for 10th place, six strokes ahead of the Mavericks.
The 18-team field returns to competition tomorrow for the tournament's final round beginning at 9:30 a.m. (CST). Live results are available at Golfstat.com.
On the strength of its top golfer, 2nd ranked sophomore Justin Suh, USC pulled ahead of the 18-team field with an impressive 16-under par 268 today. The Trojans lead 13th ranked Stanford by just one stroke. Host Saint Mary's is in third place at 3-under par and is the only other team in the field with an under par team score.
Suh, a native of nearby San Jose, posted rounds of 67-66 and owns a 3-stroke lead over teammate Kaito Onishi in the competition for medalist honors. Arizona's Brad Reeves is in third place at 5-under. A total of 19 golfers are under par after the first two rounds.
UTA graduate transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) moved up 17 spots on the leaderboard today after firing a 2-under par 69 on the 7,002-yard, par 71 Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course. After turning in a 75 yesterday, Thornton is at 2-over for the tournament and enters tomorrow in a tie for 33rd place.
The Baylor graduate opened his round by going 3-under par on the front nine with four birdies and a bogey before suffering double bogey on the par 4 10th hole. He regained two strokes to move to 3-under par heading into No 18, but dropped a stroke to conclude his round.
Senior Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) and junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas) are tied for 44th place at 4-over par. After posting a 1-over par yesterday, Guanlao turned in a 3 over par 74 in today's second round. Gore started his round with a trio of birdies to move to 3-under after the first eight holes. But, bogeys on nos. 9, 12 and 17 and a double bogey on the par 5 13th pushed him to 4-over. He rebounded with a birdie on his final hole of the day.
Freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas) is in a tie for 62nd place after rounds of 74-75 on the first two days. Senior Jake Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) dropped to a tie for 75th place at 10-over par.
Following the conclusion of the Saint Mary's Invitational, UTA will be off for a little more than three months before returning to competition on Feb. 16-18 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The Mavericks play a total of five challenging regular season spring tournaments, including ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge in Irving, Texas, the Valspar Collegiate Championships in Palm City Fla. and the Bubba Barnett Collegiate in Jonesboro, Ark. before concluding the schedule at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
The annual Sun Belt Golf Championships are scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
