PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The UT Arlington men’s golf team concluded play at Poppy Hills Golf Course today among a loaded field of some of the top teams in college golf at the Saint Mary’s Invitational.
The Mavericks posted team scores of 294-290-297 to finish tied with UC Irvine for 15th place in the 18-team field. UTA finished one stroke behind UC Santa Bara and four back of Fresno State. A total of seven teams in the field entered the tournament ranked among the top 50 in the country, according to Golfstat.com.
33rd ranked USC claimed the team championship by six strokes over 13th ranked Stanford. The Trojans went 28-under par for the tournament, including today’s 15-under on the final round. Colorado State finished in third place at 12-under, followed by BYU, San Francisco and host Saint Mary’s. Two-time defending champion San Diego State finished in seventh place.
USC sophomore Justin Suh (San Jose) went wire-to-wire to earn medalist honors. He posted rounds of 67-66-67 to finish the tournament at 13-under par 200. Suh, who is ranked seond in the country, claimed a 5-stroke victory over a trio of runners-up that included Patrick Fishburn of BYU, Hayden Sheih from Santa Clara and teammate Kaito Onishi.
Graduate transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) and junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas) tied for the team’s top finish, each finishing tied for 51st place at 6-over par 219. Thornton posted rounds of 75-69-75, while Gore went 74-72-73.
Senior Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) turned in scores of 72-74-75 to finish the 54-hole event with an 8-over par 221 to finish in a tie for 59th place. Freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas) finished tied for 65th at 10-over with rounds of 74-75-74. Senior Jake Greenspoon went 74-78-75 to conclude the tournament in a tie for 80th place at 14-over par.
UTA will be off for a little more than three months before returning to competition on Feb. 16-18 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The Mavericks play a total of five challenging regular season spring tournaments, including ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge in Irving, Texas, the Valspar Collegiate Championships in Palm City Fla. and the Bubba Barnett Collegiate in Jonesboro, Ark. before concluding the schedule at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
The annual Sun Belt Golf Championships are scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
