UTA GOLF TEAM LANDS UNLV TRANSFER

Kevin Carrigan adds talent and depth to record-breaking squad as spring season approaches.

Jan. 21, 2008

ARLINGTON, Texas - - UT Arlington men's golf coach Jay Rees has announced that Kevin Carrigan, a transfer from UNLV and former Midland College standout, has joined the Mavericks golf team and will tee it up this spring. Carrigan will be eligible this season and all of 2008-09.

Carrigan played high school golf in his native Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and is a 2004 graduate of Lambrick Park Secondary school. He attended Midland College in Midland, Texas, for two years. Carrigan helped Midland College capture the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association national championship.

Carrigan tied for third at the 2006 national tournament with a 16-under par 272 over the 72-hole event. He also recorded three individual titles that year.

"I looked at what these guys did in the spring and I knew Coach Rees from when he recruited me out of junior college and knew that this is where I wanted to play," Carrigan said. "I'm coming in here with the mindset that I want to help this team win and win in a big way."

Rees says Carrigan is a tireless worker who will fit in well with the players already on the squad as it battles Lamar and the rest of the Southland Conference this spring. Carrigan arrived in Arlington over the weekend and has already played three rounds of golf - including a round Friday in cold and light drizzle.

"I think Kevin can make an immediate impact for our program," Rees said. "He comes from a great deal of success at Midland College and understands what it takes to compete on a national level. He's outgoing and is very excited to be with our program and with the talented players we already have. He will fit in perfectly."

The Mavericks golf team kicked of the season with a welcoming party Monday at the Gilstrap Athletic Center. Practice begins Jan. 22 in preparation for the season-opening tournament Feb. 24-26 at the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate in Orland, Fla.

UTA, which is currently ranked in the Top 40 in two different national polls, have already captured one championship in the fall. Two times last semester, the Mavericks broke school records for shooting the lowest team rounds in UTA golf history.

"With what we have coming back from the fall semester, the addition of Kevin will make us even stronger," Rees said. "I think we're all pretty excited to get out there and prepare for what could be the continuation of a special year for UTA golf."
