MG: Challenging field awaits Mavs in spring opener

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- The UT Arlington men's golf team opens its spring season this weekend against a challenging field of some of the top programs in the country at the 2018 University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

The 54-hole event is comprised of a single round going off hole Nos. 1 and 10 each day Friday through Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. (CST) at 7,322-yard, par 72 Classic Club. The low four scores from each team's five designated golfers count toward the team total each round. A team champion and individual medalist will be awarded following Sunday's final round.

The impressive 23-team field includes programs from Boise State, California, Cal State Fullerton, Colorado, Denver, Idaho, Kansas, Little Rock, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, Old Dominion, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Tennessee, TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA, UC Riverside, UTA, Wichita State and host Wyoming.

The field includes three teams ranked among the top 25 in the national ratings, six in the top 50 and 10 among the top 100. At 14th, Texas Tech owns the top-rated team in the field, while the Cal Bears are ranked 15th and UCLA is 21st.

UTA will be represented with a lineup consisting of freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas), senior Jake Greenspoon (Houston, Texas), graduate student Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas), senior Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) and junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas).



Designed by Arnold Palmer Company with input from the PGA Tour, Classic Club has served as a host site for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. The course features rolling terrain, wide landing areas, several elevated tees featuring a core design more than 5,000 Pine, California Pepper & Olive trees, offset by flowering bushes, shrubs, and 11,000 cubic yards of mulch and pine cover, all playing off the surrounding mountains and vistas that are exclusive to the Coachella Valley. Classic Club also maintains 30 acres of lake and water features, including 14 stone bridges.

Following the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, UTA returns to action on March 11-12 at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate in Leland, N.C. The team will play five regular season spring events prior to the annual Sun Belt Conference Championships, which are scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Course in Miramar Beach, Fla.
