UTA GOLFERS FINISH SECOND AT RIO PINAR INVITATIONAL
Feb. 24, 2009
ORLANDO, Fla. - The UTA golf team continued its climb up the ladder among the best teams in the nation as they finished in second at the Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, Fla. Tuesday.
Helped by Bobby Massa's second place individual finish at 10-under par, the Mavericks shot a one-over par team score of 865 finishing behind only host Central Florida who posted a team score of 851.
"It was a great day for us," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "Bobby did a remarkable job in some tough conditions. Any score around par was a good score today and that is basically where we finished ."
On a windy day in Orlando, Massa carded a five-under 67 which was the low round of the day to help the Mavs finish second.
The Mavericks entered the final day tied for third with Vanderbilt and just a few shots behind Louisville, both of which the UTA passed Tuesday.
"It was good for us to move past those teams today," Rees said. "That will help up move up in the national rankings."
Bryce Easton shot a two-under 70 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 22nd at three-over 216. Kevin Carrigan was in a tie for 53rd at 224 while Michael Van De Venter finished in a tie for 72nd at 227. Zack Fischer was forced to withdraw from the race for the individual race after having to pull out of Monday's first round due to illness, but returned to play the second and third rounds and shot an 80 on Tuesday.
"Bryce helped us a bunch today," Rees said. "Van De Venter was off a little today and Fischer struggled a little today. We have room to get better and our guys know that. We are looking forward to getting back home, getting caught up on school and getting ready for the next tournament."
The Mavericks do not have a tournament the next two weeks but return to action at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas on March 13 and 14.
