ARLINGTON, Texas -- Now just two weeks away from the 2017 SBC Championships, UTA men's golf is on the rise and peaking at the right time with one final tournament left for adjustments. The Mavericks will travel to Bastrop, Texas to compete in the Jim West Intercollegiate this week.
UTA is one of 11 teams being hosted by Texas State at the Wolfdancer Golf Club, a par-72, 7,205-yard course. The tournament will be played on Monday and Tuesday with a practice round scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Rounds 1 and 2 will take place on Monday, with the final round set the following day. Both have 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts.
The Mavericks will be represented by seniors Zach Galliford and Josh Radcliff, junior Aaron Guanlao, and sophomores Tanner Gore and Camilo Avila. Senior Harrison Moore will compete as an individual.
Other teams in the field include Incarnate Word, Louisiana, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts, Rice, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, St. Edward’s, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and UT Rio Grande Valley. The Mavs have an opportunity to observe Sun Belt members Louisiana and Texas State one more time prior to the league tournament at the end of the month.
UTA has only grown stronger since the start of its spring slate, claiming top-10 finishes in its last three tournaments with the team's best coming most recently at the Little Rock First Tee College Classic on March 28. The Mavericks placed third among 13 teams, with Guanlao claiming a career fourth place.
UTA coach Stuart Deane said despite troublesome weather conditions, the team showed true grit and toughness. It's with those qualities that the Mavericks have been able to lift two players into positions to potentially win as individuals. Gore tied for fourth at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate on March 20. UTA also tied for fourth, its highest posting at the time.
The Mavericks took home fifth place of 13 teams in the 2016 Jim West, shooting its lowest round of the three on the final day to score an overall 8-over 872. UTA and Rice are the only top-five finishers returning from last year. The Owls landed 1-under par to grab third. Gore was masterful in his three rounds, tying for fifth place on a 4-under 212 performance.
Wolfdancer Golf Club is located 20 miles east of Austin with the lower Colorado River running through part of its course. In January 2016, Golf Advisor named the layout one of the top 50 U.S. courses.
