ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington Mavericks men's golf team halved its dual match Saturday against Ball State at Texas Star Golf Course in Euless.
The Mavericks won two of the five individual matches, dropped two and halved the other as each team finished the day with 2 1/2 points. It was an unofficial match for both teams with the results not counting toward rankings.
Hunter Brown and Riley Fleming posted the two victories for the Mavericks, each earning one point. Riley dispensed his opponent early with an 8 and 6 victory. Hunter won his match 4 and 3. Cameron Hollek and Brad Mason dropped their matches. It took Cash Wilkerson making a pressure putt on the 18th green to halve his match and earn a half-point.
"We don’t get many opportunities to play ‘match play’ tournaments so when Coach Mike Fleck of Ball State suggested it, I was very happy to host the event," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. “Dan Walden, the head golf pro at Texas Star was very accommodating in letting us use the course on short notice and we always appreciate his help.
"It could not have been a more beautiful day for golf and everyone enjoyed the friendly competition. The ending was very fitting with each team earning 2 1/2 points."
The Mavericks return to the course Saturday in the Morris Williams Invitational in Austin.
