MAGNOLIA, Texas - The UTA mens golf team shot its second-best round of the spring season with a four-over-par 292 to stand in fifth place after the opening day of the 2004 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championships at the High Madow Ranch Golf Course here Monday.
Round two is slated for Tuesday with the third and final round set for Wednesday.
Louisiana-Monroe leads the tournament by six strokes with a 10-under-par 278. McNeese State sits in second place at 284. Tournament favorite and three-time defending champion Lamar is at 285 and Texas-San Antonio is fourth at 287.
UTA found the par-3s tough on the par-72, 7370-yard course, shooting five-over-par for the day. Meanwhile, the Mavs made their hay on the par-5s, shooting six-under-par. UTA posted the fewest pars on opening day with 48.
Individually, UTSA's Matt Johnston carded seven birdies en route to a score of 66, two strokes ahead of Louisiana-Monroe's Casey Russell.
