Michael Mullin, a three-time all-District 16-5A golfer from Austin Westlake, signed a National Letter of Intent with the UTA men's golf team, it was announced recently.
Mullin earned all-region honors in 2003 and 2004 and earned honorable mention all-state honors at the Texas 5A State Championship as a sophomore with a 20th-place finish following rounds of 74 and 76. As a junior, he advanced to the Texas State Championship as an individual and earned third-team all-state honors with a 12th-place finish with rounds of 73-73 (146) at the Roy Kiser Golf Course in Austin.
During his high school career, Mullin won eight tournaments and came in second place in four others.
"To have a recruit of Michael's abilities and accomplishments from such a dominant golf program such as Austin Westlake, I feel it can open doors for other top players from Austin and throughout the state to be a part of building this program into one of national prominence," said Rees, now in his sixth season as the head golf coach at UTA.
In 2003, Mullin came in second in the Texas/Oklahoma Championship Division with rounds of 78, 74, 69 and 74 and tied for 17th at the AJGA TaylorMade at Bentwood shooting 74 and 72. Other highlights include tying for 26th at the 2004 AJGA Valero Texas Open in San Antonio with rounds of 75, 74, and 76 at the Dominion Country Club and an 18th-place finish at the 2004 FCWT Bear Creek West Junior Tournament.
