GOLFERS HEAD TO SLC TOURNAMENT

KINGWOOD, Texas - UTA looks for its third win of the 2004-05 season when they compete at the 2005 Southland Conference Championships beginning Monday at the Deerwood Course in Kingwood, Texas.
The Mavericks enter the tournament after a fourth-place finish at the LSU Spring Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. The finish was the ninth top-four finish in 10 tournaments for the Mavericks who are ranked 53rd by golfstat.com this week.
A win would give UTA an automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA Central Regional Tournament, May 19-21, in South Bend, Ind. It would be the third trip to the NCAAs in 11 seasons for the Mavericks.
UTA and Lamar are the only two SLC schools rated in the Top 50 nationally, according to Golfstat.com through April 21. UTA (2), Lamar (3) and Stephen F Austin (3) are the three SLC schools won have won multiple tournament this season.
After this week's tournament, UTA will conclude the 2005 regular season at the prestigious Maxwell Cup in Ardmore, Okla., May 15-16.
UTA tied for fourth, 11 shots behind winner Louisiana-Monroe, at last year's SLC Championships at the High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas.
UTA won the SLC title in 1995 and 1999.
Individually, Jason Hughes (1995) and Adam Babb (2000) captured the medlaist title. Hughes was named the SLC Athlete of the Year in 1995.
NUMBER CRUNCHING:Junior Tyrone Mordt's 72.70 scoring average is 66th best in nation and ninth in the region. he also leads the nation with others as a golfer without a triple-bogey or worst this season... Mordt is 13st in fariways hit with an accuracy of 77.8 percent... Marc Campbell is second nationally in par-3 greens in regulation at 75.0 percent and eighth in sand saves... UTA ranks 10th nationally in par-4 scoring at 4.13 per hole.
