UTA'S ESTORGA NAMED SLC NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR; KRANTZ NAMED SLC GOLF STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
April 25, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington golfers Anthony Estorga and Jordan Krantz were honored by the Southland Conference Friday. Estorga was named SLC Newcomer of the Year and first team All-SLC by the league's coaches, while Krantz earned the SLC's top academic honor, SLC Student-Athlete of the Year, awarded by the conference awards committee.
Estorga, a senior from Haltom City who transferred to UTA this year after playing at Texas Wesleyan his first three years, leads the Mavericks with a 72.91 strokes per round average in 2002-03, the fourth best average in the conference. During the spring season, he held a 72.88 average. Earlier this week, Estorga finished seventh at the Southland Conference Championship in Hattiesburg, Miss. He finished in the top 15 in eight of the 11 tournaments he played in over the course of the year. He will await word from the NCAA selection committee to find out if he will be invited to the NCAA Regional Tournament as an individual. If Estorga is selected to play in the regional, it will mark the seventh consecutive year UTA will have been represented by an individual or the entire team in the regionals.
Krantz is the second UTA student-athlete to win the award. Earlier this spring, UTA men's basketball player Josh Daniel won the Student-Athlete of the Year honor in his sport.
