MAVERICKS HEAD TO AUSTIN FOR NCAA GOLF REGIONAL
May 12, 2009 Complete NCAA Austin Regional Championships Information ARLINGTON, Tx. - UTA MAVERICKS NCAA REGIONAL GOLF NOTEBOOK A LOOK AT THE MAVERICKS: The UT Arlington golf team is at the NCAA Austin Regional this Thursday-Saturday (May14-16)...the top 5 teams (out of 13) will advance to the NCAA Finals at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio from May 27-30...The Mavericks will enter the regional as the ninth seed and join the following schools in the tournament - Stanford, Florida, Texas Tech, Texas, UNLV, California, Lamar, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, New Mexico State and Jackson State. MAVERICKS FINISHING IN HIGH PLACES: UTA has played 10 tournaments this season, winning one - the UTA/Waterchase Invitational...the team also registered 3 second 7 top 4 finishes and had 9 top 10 finishes in these 10 tournaments...the Mavs had 2 tournaments canceled due to weather - the Rees Jones Invitational in the fall and the Shocker Classic in the spring. UTA NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY: This NCAA Regional appearance is the second consecutive, fourth in the last 5 years and the seventh in school history... Last year the team played at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio and finished 22nd with Bobby Massa being the top individual as he finished in a tie for 33rd...the Mavs also made the postseason in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 the team finished 21st at the West Regional in Palo Alto, Calif., and then finished in a tie for 16th in 2006 at the Central Regional in Cleveland, Ohio...UTA also made regional appearances in 1998 (15th at Oak Hills CC in San Antonio), 1999 (T15th, at Ohio State's Scarlet Course) and 2002 (T17th, Little Rock, Ark.). FOURSOME OF MAVERICKS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: Bobby Massa, Zack Fischer and Michael Van deVenter were named to the first, second and third All-Southland Conference teams respectively while Bryce Easton earned honorable mention honors.
MASSA A TWO-TIME FIRST TEAMER: Bobby Massa was named to the All-Southland first team for the second consecutive season earlier this month...he is now just the fourth UTA golfer to earn multiple first team all-conference honors joining Greg Gregory (1993, 1995), Harry Singh (1996, 1998) and Shad Muth (2001-02). REES EARNS COACH OF THE YEAR: Head coach Jay Rees earned his second Southland Conference Coach of the Year award following the 2009 regular season...the Mavs head coach, who is in his 10th year at the helm, also won the award in 2005. MASSA ON TRACK TO SET SCHOOL RECORD: Bobby Massa's 71.97 stroke average is on pace to set a school record breaking the current mark of 72.6 held by Adam Babb (72.685 in 2000) and Tyrone Mordt (72.694 in 2003). SEASON RECORD: The Mavericks fashioned a 116-31-1 head-to-head record this season during their 10 tournaments...they also went 4-5 against teams in this regional - 2-0 vs. New Mexico State, 1-0 vs. UNLV, 1-1 vs. Mississippi State, 0-1 vs. Texas and Texas Tech and 0-2 vs. Lamar. LATEST RANKINGS: UTA is ranked 49th in the latest golfstat.com rankings as of May 4...they are ranked 53rd in the last golfweek.com rankings...Bobby Massa is 55th in the golfstat.com individual rankings...he is 73rd in the golfweek rankings. FAMILIAR PLACE: The Mavericks have had success at The University of Texas Golf Club as all of the players head coach Jay Rees will take with him have played the course a number of times and the team tied for first in last Texas Intercollegiate Cup which was held there in the fall of 2007. SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RECAP: The Mavericks finished second behind conference champion Lamar, with whom UTA is paired with in the first round of the regional...Zack Fischer was a co-medalist and then was eliminated after the first hole of the three-way playoff. |
