MG: Mavericks open NCAA Regionals at Georgia

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington golf team earned the No. 11 seed in the NCAA Regional held at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia. The Mavericks are headed to the NCAAs for the fourth time in the last five years, sixth in the last eight years and seven times overall under head coach Jay Rees. It's the ninth regional in school history. The Mavericks are ranked 64th nationally and No. 1 in short game. UTA heads into the NCAAs with a 74-64-2 record.

NCAA TOURNAMENT: Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted Thursday-Saturday. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals, while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. UTA is competing in a 13-team regional. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals will be conducted May 29-June 3, at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. The University of Southern California is the host institution for this year's championships.

MAVERICKS FINISHING IN HIGH PLACES: UTA has played 11 tournaments this season and placed in the top three on three occasions - UTA/Waterchase Invitational, Notre Dame Gridiron Classic and the Southland Conference Championships.

THREESOME OF MAVERICKS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: UT Arlington junior Paul McConnell was selected to the 2011-12 Southland Conference first team, junior Hunter Brown earned third-team honors and junior Cameron Hollek was named to the honorable mention team.

McConnell earned first-team all-league mention after earning second-team all-conference mention a season ago when he was the conference's newcomer of the year. McConnell tied for 22nd at this year's Southland championship at 15-over par, but his stroke average of 73.16 was fifth best in the league. He won the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in September and finished the year with two other top-10 finishes.

SEASON RECORD: The Mavericks fashioned a 74-64-2 head-to-head record this season during their 11 tournaments.
