Arlington, Tex. - UTA MAVERICKS NCAA REGIONAL GOLF NOTEBOOK
A LOOK AT THE MAVERICKS: The UT Arlington golf team is at the NCAA Tucson Regional this Thursday-Saturday (May 19-21)...the tournament will take place at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club which will play to 7,199 yards and a par of 72...the top 5 teams (out of 14) will advance to the NCAA Finals at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla....the Mavericks (who are seeded 12th) will enter the regional as the 12th seed and join the following schools and joining the Mavericks in the regional field will be (in order of seeding) Texas A&M, San Diego State, Texas Tech, California, Liberty, Washington, Pepperdine, Oregon State, Purdue, UC Davis, Arizona, Loyola (Maryland) and Army.

MAVERICKS FINISHING IN HIGH PLACES: UTA has played 11 tournaments this season and won three - The Lone Star Invitational, the San Diego Intercollegiate (co-champion) and the Southland Conference Championship...the team also registered 5 top 5 finishes and had 9 top 10 finishes in these 11 tournaments...the three victories are the second most in a season in UTA history.
UTA NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY: This NCAA Regional appearance is the third in the last four years, fifth in the last 7 years and the eighth in school history... UTA, who qualified for the tournament by winning the Southland Conference title three weeks ago, last appeared in the NCAA's in 2009 when they finished a program-best eighth at the UT Golf Club in Austin...

THREESOME OF MAVERICKS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS: Three UT Arlington golfers earned all-conference honors and head coach Jay Rees earned his third Coach of the Year award, the Southland Conference announced earlier this month.
ANOTHER NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Sophomore Paul McConnell, who transferred to UTA from Colorado, was also named the Southland Conference's Newcomer of the Year...he is the sixth UT Arlington golfer to earn Newcomer of the Year honors following Shad Muth (2001), Anthony Estorga (2003), Jeff Murray (2005), Ryan Zamarano (2006) and Wes Worster (2010).
FISCHER A TWO-TIME FIRST TEAMER: Zack Fischer was named to the All-Southland first team for the second consecutive season earlier this month...he is now just the fifth UTA golfer to earn multiple first team all-conference honors joining Greg Gregory (1993, 1995), Harry Singh (1996, 1998), Shad Muth (2001-02) and Bobby Massa (2008-09).
REES EARNS COACH OF THE YEAR: Head coach Jay Rees earned his third Southland Conference Coach of the Year award following the 2011 regular season...the Mavs head coach, who is in his 12th year at the helm, also won the award in 2005 and 2009...Rees has guided the Mavericks to 12 victories in his time at UTA.
FISCHER ON TRACK TO SET SCHOOL RECORD: Zack Fischer has a chance to become the school's all-time leader in season stroke average...he enters the NCAA Regionals with an average of 72.58 in 2011 which is just behind his 72.50 mark of last year and the school record of 72.42 set by Bobby Massa in 2009.
SEASON RECORD: The Mavericks fashioned an 87-55-1 head-to-head record this season during their 11 tournaments...they also went 2-6 against teams in the Tucson Regional.
LATEST RANKINGS: UTA is ranked 67th in the latest golfstat.com rankings as of May 4...they are ranked 62nd in the last golfweek.com rankings...Zack Fischer is 116th in the golfstat.com individual rankings...he is 140th in the Golfweek rankings.
SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RECAP: UTA fired a final round one-over team score of 289 and held off a challenge from Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana to win the Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship...the conference title was the Mavericks first since 2005 and its fourth overall...UTA won by 10 shots which was its ninth-largest margin of victory in school history...that margin was also the third-largest in a conference championship for the Mavericks...Lamar shot a 290 in the final round to finish at eight-over 872 while Southeastern Louisiana recorded a 299 to finish at nine-over 873...UTA finished with a team score of 862 which was its second-lowest in SLC Championship play behind an 861 posted in its last victory six years ago...UTA was led by its two seniors Wes Worster and Zack Fischer...Worster finished in a tie for third at two-under 214 after shooting a two-over 74 in the windy conditions at the Waterchase Golf Club...Fischer carded a one-under 71 and finished in a tie for fifth with a one-under total of 215...sophomore Paul McConnell finished in eighth place with an even par 216 after shooting 72 Wednesday to give the Mavericks three players in the top 10.
