ARLINGTON, Tx. - Van deVenter named to Southland Conference Men's Golf All-Academic Team
UT Arlington junior golfer Michael Van deVenter has been selected to the Southland Conference's men's golf All-Academic team.
Van deVenter makes his second consecutive appearance on the men's golf all-academic team. A native of Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa, Van deVenter is a finance major with a team-high 3.57 GPA.
A third-team all-conference selection, Van deVenter posted a 73.73 stroke average in 30 rounds of play, won the UTA/Waterchase Invitational and shot a season-low 67 three times.
Joining him on the all-academic team was Southeastern Louisiana's Cedric Scotto, who was named the conference's men's golf student-athlete of the year, and Matthew Carvell, Sam Houston State's Beau Willis and Central Arkansas' Steven Lecuyer.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 12 member schools, voted for the student-athlete of the year. The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one male and one female student-athlete who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Included in Capital One Bank's support of the Southland Conference Academic Awards Program is the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the All-Academic Teams, the Student-Athlete of the Year, the Scholar-Athlete Award and the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
