PLANO, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington led all schools with three nods on the 2005 Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference Men's Golf All-Academic Team it was announced May 26.
The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected all-conference and/or named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's tournaments.
Matt Johnston of the University of Texas at San Antonio has been selected as the men's golf student-athlete of the year in the league.
The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement.
Jordan Krantz, Marc Campbell and Zack Reeves make up the UTA academic contingent with Krantz closing out his Maverick career on top. The native from Vermillion Bay, Ontario (Canada), was selected the SLC Men's Golfer of the Year in 2005 and also picked up first-team honors. Krantz was key to UTA winning its first SLC championship since 1999 and an automatic berth to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament, which the Mavs placed 21st. Krantz averaged 72.73 strokes per round, which ranks second on the single-season all-time scoring average at UTA. He graduated with a 3.87 GPA as an exercise science major.
Campbell and Reeves, both business majors, were also instrumental to UTA's success this year. Campbell averaged 74.73 in 30 rounds of golf while Reeves tallied a 74.25 stroke average. Campbell's top finish was an eight-place tie at the Baylor Invitational with a 54-hole score of 217. The Southlake, Texas, native holds a 3.90 GPA.
Reeves, a UTA local with a 3.60 GPA, was named to the All-SLC second team this year. His highest finish came in a tie for fourth at the SLC Championship with a two-over par 218. Hibernia's support of the Southland Conference Academic Awards Program include the F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the Hibernia Bank Southland Conference All-Academic Teams, Hibernia Bank Student-Athlete of the Year, Hibernia Bank Scholar-Athlete Award and the Hibernia Bank Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll.
