TWO MAVERICK GOLFERS MAKE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

FRISCO, Texas - - UT Arlington senior Zack Reeves and sophomore Michael van de Venter have been named to the Academic All-Southland Conference Golf Team, the league announced Tuesday. Reeves, a senior and marketing major from Arlington, finished his final UTA golf season with a 3.12 grade-point average. Van de Venter is a sophomore Management major from Centurion, South Africa, and highlighted a spectacular athletic season with an even better year academically. Van de Venter finished the year with a 3.489 GPA. On the course, Reeves turned in the best three-round tournament score in school history with a 65-71-65=201 at the Turtle Bay Invitational last fall. Reeves, who had three Top 10 finishes in 2007-08, had a 73.54 stroke average. Van de Venter continued his breakout sophomore campaign with a 73.74 stroke average. He also recorded three Top 10 finishes, capped by a second-place finish in the UT Arlington Fall Classic. Van de Venter shot a 68-70-74=212 in that tournament. Reeves and Van de Venter joined three other athletes on the Academic All-SLC team: junior Matthew Carvell from Southeastern Louisisana, sophomore Beau Willis from Sam Houston State and senior Brandon Frankhouser from Sam Houston State. Carvell was named the 2008 Men's Golf Student Athlete of the Year. The junior from Johannesburg, South Africa had five Top 10 finishes and a 74.96 stroke-average on the year (13 tournaments). He finished tied for sixth at the Southland Conference Men's Championships in Lake Charles, La., with a three-round total of 220.
