US Junior Amateur Qualifier Results | 108th Texas Amateur Championship Homepage
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Members of the men's golf team are carrying a "no time off" mentality into summer break and have already begun competing, and winning, tournaments around the metroplex.
Incoming freshman Paul Gonzalez claimed a U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier on Tuesday at Royal Oaks Country Club. The Maverick newcomer claimed medalist honors from a field of 105 Texas and Oklahoma-based golfers competing for spots at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, scheduled for July 17-22 at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan. The Dallas qualifier was one of 58 events around the country.
Gonzalez completed the 7,049-yard course at 3-under 68 to earn the title by a stroke. The Waxahachie native recorded a bogey on hole No. 3, but bounced right back to sink a pair of birdie putts. One stroke out of the lead heading into the back nine, Gonzalez and Plano native Parker Coody eventually became tied at 58 through 15. Another two birdies for the Mav on No. 16 and 18 edged his competitor and sealed the victory.
Gonzalez is joining the program from Waxahachie High School, where he earned All-State, All-Region and district champion honors. He previously claimed the 2015 and 2016 TaylorMade Junior Open Championships and won the NTPGA All-American Tour Challenge at the Falls Champion.
Gonzalez is one of three golfers representing UTA in two tournaments this week. Senior Will Dennis and freshman Andrew Lindberg will participate at the 108th Texas Amateur Championship at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas Thursday through Sunday.
Round 1 begins Thursday with Lindberg teeing off at 9:10 a.m. and Dennis at 2:20 p.m. The event is designed for 18 holes of individual stroke play on Lakewood's 6,750-yard, par- 71 course.
Dennis appeared in five tournaments for UTA throughout the 2016-17 slate and registered a 76.72 scoring average in 18 rounds. Lindberg will be joining the program as a newcomer from Coppell High School.
