MONROE, La. - UT Arlington junior-to-be golfer Zack Reeves fired a second round score of one-over-par 73 and led a group of six Maverick golfers to advance to the stroke play competition at the 2006 W.E. Cole Cotton States Invitational at the Bayou DeSiard Country Club here Wednesday.

Stroke play begins Thursday morning with the winners advancing to the second round later in the day. Third round and quarterfinal play is slated for Friday and semifinals and finals are Saturday.

Reeves, a first-team all-Southland Conference pick last season, is ranked 11th in the bracket. He will face Justin Engle of Sugar Land today.

Junior-to-be Michael Douthit (73-71-144), redshirt freshman Travis Watson (76-71-147), senior-to-be Ryan Zamorano (69-78-147), redshirt freshman Kevin Varrichio (71-77-148) and sophomore-to-be Michael Mullin (77-72-149) all advanced to the stroke play.

Senior-to-be Bryan Baker (75-76-151), junior-to-be Chris Myers (73-82-155) and incoming freshman Bobby Massa (75-81-156) failed to advance past the 36-hole qualifier.

University of Arkansas standout Stephen Cox is the leader after rounds of 66 and 70 (136).

Thursday's pairings include Douthit meeting Varrichio at 9:10 a.m. Watson will meet Jacob Collinsworth of Fairhope, Ala, Zamorano faces B.C. Thibeaux III of Lafayette, La., and Mullin will face All-Big 12 golfer Andrew Dresser of Texas Tech.

Originally played in 1949 as the Bayou DeSiard Labor Day Golf Tournament, the event was renamed The Cotton States Invitational in 1951 by the club's young head professional, W. E. "Winnie" Cole . In 1978, the event was retitled to the W. E. Cole Cotton States Invitational Golf Tournament. Among the former participants at the Cotton States Tournament are Hal Sutton, Bill Rogers, Don January, Gil Morgan, John Mahaffey, David Toms and 1998 British Open runner-up Brian Watts.
