MONROE, La. - - UT Arlington junior golfer Bobby Massa, one of the top Maverick performers during last year's record-breaking season, continued to shine this summer with a victory in one of the region's top collegiate tournaments.
Massa defeated Wichita Falls resident and University of Arkansas golfer Will Osborne, 3 and 2, for his sixth win in match play to capture the tournament championship on Sunday at the Cotton States Invitational in Monroe, La.
Massa joins former PGA golfers Hal Sutton, David Toms and Bill Rogers as former winners of the event.
Tournament competitors qualiefied for Match Play by shooting two rounds in Stroke Play on the par-72 Bayou DeSiard Country Club Course. Massa finished in a tie for 10th after the two rounds, shooting 72-70=142. In head-to-head competition, he moved ahead to the second round with a 4 and 2 victory against Aledo, Texas resident Michael Miller.
He made it to the title match with victories against Bob Cooper, Chris Wilson, Hudson Johnson and Ryan Haselden. Johnson was hot going into the match against Massa, finishing in a tie for first during stroke play.
Massa will be a junior next fall for a Mavericks team that returns all but one golfer. Massa finished his sophomore season with a team-best 73.08 stroke average.
