MASSA HANGS WITH THE PROS AT TEXAS STATE OPEN IN TYLER

UT Arlington golfer finishes 22nd in the annual NTPGA event.

July 22, 2008

TYLER, Texas - - UT Arlington golfer Bobby Massa followed his victory at the Cotton States Invitational earlier this month with another solid performance, shooting a 2-under-par 68-66-73-71=278 for 22nd place at the Texas State Open last weekend.

Massa, who will be a junior this fall at UT Arlington, is quickly establishing himself as the Mavericks top returning player with a spectacular summer season. The Mavericks lose just one senior off last years squad, which broke team scoring records twice in the Fall 2007 season.

At last weekend's Texas State Open - a tournament typically dominated each year by professional golfers - Massa was in second place after the second round and easily made the cut. By the time the tournament was over, he had defeated more than 100 total golfers entered in the event held at The Cascades in Tyler.

He finished ahead of 21 other amateurs.

Professional golfer Martin Piller of Dallas, won the tournament with a four-round score of 266.

A first-team All-Southland Conference selection, Massa finished his sophomore year last season with a team-best 73.08 stroke average. He finished in the Top 10 four times during the fall and spring.
