ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington men's golf program announced the addition of 2-time high school state champion and former Baylor University golfer Nick Thornton.
A native of Boerne, Thornton received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Baylor in May and will attend graduate school at UTA. He did not compete as a freshman at Baylor in 2013-14 and has one season of NCAA eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited to add Nick to our program," said UTA director of golf Stuart Deane. "He was an outstanding youth golfer and played three seasons for one of the nation's top 10 programs at Baylor. He has very good experience playing at a high level and will make an immediate contribution to our program."
Thornton, a 2013 graduate of Geneva High School in Boerne, claimed two state TAPPS 2A championships and led his team to a pair of state titles. He was a 4-time all-state honoree and was honored as a 3-time all-state selection in basketball. The salutatorian of his graduating class, Thornton was a member of the National Honor Society before earning Big 12 Commissioner's Honor roll honors in each of his four years at Baylor.
As a member of the Baylor golf team, Thornton played in 10 tournaments and registered a 73.80 career scoring average. One-third of his 30 rounds were at par or better and he finished among the top 25 individuals in three tournaments. His top finish was an 11th place effort at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Last season, Thornton competed for Baylor as an individual in four events: The Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, The All-American, The Querencia Cabo Collegiate and the Linger Longer Invitational. He posted a 73.33 scoring average. The Bears were ranked No. 1 in the nation in early April and ended their season in the quarterfinals of match play at the NCAA Championships, the best national finish in program history.
The UTA men's golf team opens its fall season Sept. 11-12 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Mavericks play five fall tournaments, concluding with the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif. in early November.
