ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's golf team opens its season next week at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate at Hattiesburg (Miss.) Country Club.
The tournament is scheduled to open on Monday, Sept. 11 with the first day's 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday's final round tee times are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with start times assigned based on each team's placement following the first two rounds.
The Mavericks join programs from Mercer, Missouri State, Rice, Sam Houston State, Samford, Southeastern Louisiana, Louisiana, New Orleans, South Alabama, host Southern Miss and UTSA. UTA is paired with golfers from Mercer and Southeastern Louisiana in Monday's first two rounds.
The UTA lineup will be comprised of graduate transfer Nick Thornton, junior Tanner Gore, freshman Paul Gonzalez, senior Aaron Guanlao and senior Jake Greenspoon. Redshirt freshman Zach Cole is slated to compete as an individual with his scores not eligible to count toward the team's total.
The Sam Hall Intercollegiate will mark the first-ever collegiate competition for Gonzalez and Cole as well as the first as a Maverick for Baylor graduate transfer Nick Thornton. Gore, Guanlao and Greenspoon have played a combined total of 70 collegiate events.
Hattiesburg Country Club will feature a par 71, 6,902 yard layout for the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. The golfers will play two rounds on Monday with a final round on Tuesday. The low four scores in each round will count toward the team's total.
Built in 1959, the course was enhanced in 1999 after an imaginative redesign by Max Maxwell. Over the years, it has hosted numerous tournaments, including the USGA qualifiers, state amateur championships and state opens. From 1968 until 1993, Hattiesburg Country Club hosted the PGA TOUR's Magnolia Classic. Originally held in April during the same week as The Masters, some of the biggest names in professional golf walked among the towering pines lining the course's fairway. Some of the world's greatest players, such as Nick Faldo, have competed at HCC at some point in their careers. Notable champions include Craig Stadler, Roger Maltbie, Russ Cochran, Jim Gallagher Jr. and the late Payne Stewart, who won his first Tour event at HCC in 1982.
Following the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, the Mavericks travel to Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 22-23 for the 63rd annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The tournament is hosted by the University of New Mexico at The Championship Golf Course, which is generally recognized as one of the top public courses in the country and has served as the site of four NCAA Championships.
