GOLF OPENS UP FALL SEASON AT PACIFIC INVITATIONAL
Sept. 19, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington Golf team will begin its 2003 Fall season on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22-23, at the 31st Annual Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif. The team will play the first and second rounds on Monday and play the third round on Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
"I expect us to compete well," said head coach Jay Rees. "We have a new group of guys this season who have developed good team chemistry and should help to make things more comfortable on the road. It will be a real positive experience to get three consistent rounds this week."
The Mavericks are one of 12 teams participating in the tournament along with the host Tigers of Pacific, Cal State Northridge, Fresno State, Georgia Southern, Long Beach State, Nevada, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Irvine and UC Riverside.
Mordt is the top returner from last season after averaging 74.90 in 29 rounds in 2002-03. Mordt continued his strong play over the summer as he captured the championship at the Zimbabwe Amateur. Krantz and Allen also return after solid performances last year shooting 75.30 (20 rounds) and 75.88 (17 rounds), respectively. Mordt and Krantz tied for seventh at the Cowboy Classic hosted by Wyoming last spring, helping the team to a third place finish, its top finish of the year. Pennington played in one tournament in the Fall last season, but had a strong summer by qualifying for the U.S. Amateur. Baker will be seeing his first collegiate action after red-shirting in 2002-03.
The Mavericks return to the links Sept. 29-30, at the Louisville Tournament in Louisville, Ken.
