Golf heads to Brickyard Collegiate in Georgia
Oct. 7, 2010
Arlington, Tex. - The UT Arlington golf team did not have too much time to rest this week as they head to their second tournament in less than a week.
The Mavericks will be playing in The Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship which is hosted by Mercer University. The tournament will be played from Oct. 8-10 at The Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club in Macon, Georgia which will play to a par of 72 and 7,128 yards.
Head coach Jay Rees will take four mainstays of his lineup so far this season to the tournament in Zack Fischer, Wes Worster, Paul McConnell and Enrique Livas. Joining them for his second tournament of the year will be Cameron Hollek.
"I think it is good that we have had those four play in every tournament this season," Rees said. "We are starting to develop the core of our team and that is something we need to do."
Fischer and Worster are tied for the team lead in season stroke average at 73.50 but Livas was the top golfer last week at the Cabo Collegiate as he finished in a tie for 12th.
The team is coming off a seventh place finish in Mexico and has one top five finish in their three tournaments this fall.
The 15 team field is highlighted by the 2010 NCAA Champions and defending Brickyard Collegiate Champions Augusta State.
Joining the Mavericks at the fourth-year event are the two-time Brickyard Collegiate Champions and 2010 SEC Champions Georgia, 2010 ACC champions Georgia Tech, Boston College, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Clemson, Colorado State, Florida State, Gonzaga, Mercer, North Florida, Oklahoma, Ole Mississippi and Virginia Tech.
UTA did not play in this tournament last year, but in 2009's rain shortened edition, Augusta State was declared the team champion after posting a two round total of 563 (-13). The Jaguars dominated the event, beating second place finishers Clemson and Chattanooga by 13 shots, who finished the tournament at 576 (E). Russell Henley of Georgia took home the individual title after two solid rounds of 69 and 65 for a total of 134 (-10).
