ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's golf team concludes its fall season this week at, perhaps, the most famous zip code in all of golf.
The Mavericks travel to Pebble Beach, Calif. to join one of the strongest tournament fields in the country Monday through Wednesday for the 12th Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course. The tournament features one 18-hole round each day with the four lowest rounds of each team's designated five golfers counting toward the team score each day.
The tournament, which features past team champions such as Notre Dame, Oregon, Cal, Baylor and 2-time defending champion San Diego State, includes an 18-team field consisting of Arizona, BYU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Oregon State, host Saint Mary's (CA), San Diego State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Stanford, Texas State, Toledo, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, USC and Washington State.
Saint Mary's sophomore Eduardo Carrete returns as the defending individual medalist.
UTA will feature a lineup consisting of graduate transfer Nick Thornton, seniors Jake Greenspoon and Aaron Guanlao, junior Tanner Gore and freshman Paul Gonzalez. That same lineup registered a team title at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate to open the season and is coming off a fifth place finish at the Little Rock Intercollegiate.
UTA golfers are scheduled to go off the first tee beginning at 10:55 a.m. (CST). Each foursome includes two players from each team. Most of the UTA side is paired with golfers from Santa Clara in tomorrow's first round. Greenspoon is playing with golfers from UC Irvine and Colorado State.
Poppy Hills became the first course to be owned and operated by a golf association in the U.S. when the Northern California Golf Association built it to serve as its headquarters and tournament home. Opened on June 1, 1986, the Robert Trent Jones Jr. design has since co-hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am from 1991 through 2009, as well as the Spalding Pebble Beach Invitational (1989, 1990, 1992, 1993) and 1991 NCAA Men's Championships.
Poppy Hills underwent an extensive renovation beginning in March of 2013 centered around water conservation, primarily by improving irrigation and drainage. Jones returned to Poppy Hills with his Robert Trent Jones II design firm, this time creating a firm, fast and fun course that unfolds seamlessly through the stunning Del Monte Forest. The new Poppy Hills reopened April 4, 2014 and currently hosts the Champions Tour's Pure Insurance Championship in conjunction with the First Tee Program.
UTA returns to competition on Feb. 16-18 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, the first of five difficult regular season spring tournaments. The Mavericks also compete at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Challenge in Irving, Texas, the Valspar Collegiate Championships in Palm City Fla. and the Bubba Barnett Collegiate in Jonesboro, Ark. before concluding their spring at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
The annual Sun Belt Golf Championships are scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
