GOLF: Mavs sign two to national letters of intent

ARLINGTON, Texas -- UTA men's golf signed Paul Gonzalez and Jacob Massengale to national letters of intent for the 2017-18 season as announced by head coach Stuart Deane. 

"Men's golf is excited about our two early signees," Deane said. "Massengale and Gonzalez are exciting prospects for the program. They both bring commitment to the work ethic and standards we have implemented since taking over the program.

"Associate head coach Casey Devoll and I were looking for players that could contribute in their first year with having four seniors graduating. Both young men are great players and we feel they can make an impact immediately."

Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas / Waxahachie) -- Second team All-State, first team All-Region and district champion as a junior ... Team qualified for regionals for the first time in four years ... Second place at DBU Patriot Major Championship ... 2015 and 2016 Taylormade Junior Open Champion ... NTPGA All-American Tour Challenge at the Falls Champion ... Tied for 17th at Optimist International Junior Golf Championship ... 2014-15 district champion with Waxahachie HS ... Second team All-Region and All-State Honorable Mention as a sophomore ... Tied for fifth at the Texas Junior Masters ... Qualified for IMG Junior World and OIJGC ... Shot a school record 289 at the 2015 Cleburne Boys Invitational.

Jacob Massengale (Montgomery, Texas / Montgomery) -- Four-year letterwinner at Montgomery HS ... Posted scores of 76-74 at 2015-16 regional tournament and garnered second team All-District honors ... Two first-place finishes at TJGT tournaments, including an even par 69-75 performance ... Finished the season ranked in the TJGT Tour's top 10 ... 2014-15 Raven's Nest Tournament Champion ... Advanced to regionals as a sophomore, averaging an 81 on the season ... Grandfather was Don Massengale, who won tournaments on both the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour ... Grandfather's brother, Rik Massengale also played on the PGA Tour from 1970-1982.
