HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington men's tennis team lost 4-0 at Rice to open the 2014 season Friday night.
"I thought we played really good doubles," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We kept the match close all the way to the end."
The Mavericks fell early to the Owls at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots to open the match.
Rice (1-2) headed into singles play up 1-0 and were able to continue its momentum. UTA freshman Daniel Echeverry lost 6-1, 6-2 to his opponent as the first singles match came to an end.
Marek Pesicka and Austin Robles also lost at the No. 3 and No. 6 position, respectively, to end it. UTA was leading at the other positions, but Rice was able to close its matches before UTA could win a match.
The Mavericks are back on the court Saturday afternoon as they take on New Orleans at 3 p.m. in Houston, Texas.
