MEN'S TENNIS WINS FIRST MATCH OF THE SEASON
Feb. 1, 2008 ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington men's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 on the season with a 5-2 win over Illinois State on Friday at the UTA Tennis Center. In singles, freshman David Costa won 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot over Nuno Jacinto. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Dmitry Minkin battled eventually falling 7-6, 4-6, 10-4 to Luka Marinkovic. Newcomer Brieuc Hamon won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 position, and Hugo Taracido bested Daniel Tobar 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Gonzalo Bienzobas picked up the Mavs fifth point of the match winning two close sets 7-6, 7-6 over Filip Miljevic. Freshman, Nishant Hari was bested at the No. 6 position by Xavier Riart-Ferrer, 6-1, 6-2. UTA started the match taking the doubles point with wins in the No.2 & 3 spots. Illinois State's No. 47 ranked doubles duo of Marinkovic and Tobar defeated Costa and Taracido, 9-8, at the No. 1 position. But, at the No. 2 doubles spot, Hamon and Hari topped Jacinto and Riart-Ferrer, 8-3. Michael Hobson and Beich were bested at the No. 3 doubles position by Bienzobas and Minkin, 8-6. The Mavs will be back in action when they travel to Austin to take on the No. 7 ranked Texas Longhorns on Sunday.
