ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington pushed its winning streak to five matches as it topped Incarnate Word 7-0 on Thursday at the UTA Tennis Center in Texas Regional action.
Taking the doubles point by winning two of the three matches, UTA pushed through in singles to sweep the Cardinals. UTA, ending a string of five consecutive at home, heads to New Mexico to take on New Mexico State and Western New Mexico beginning on Saturday.
"It was some great play for us today," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "I thought the team executed what we have been practicing on and we really came out well in doubles. They played us tough, but we were able to pull it out. In singles, there was a lot of good matches in the lineup and I am very happy with Teme winning at the top match in a tough match in a tiebreaker. Overall, it was a very good match for us. We got better from the last match and hopefully can continue this way to execute what we are practicing in training."
Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio pulled away for a quick win at No. 1 doubles in a 6-2 finish. However, UIW's No. 3 team clinched a 6-3 win to bring doubles down to the wire. Enrique Paro and Abhishek Bostola survived a battle to clinch the doubles point, winning 6-4.
UTA clinched the match with wins from Bostola at No. 5 (6-1, 6-3), Del Rio at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1) and Russo at No. 6 (6-4, 6-2).
Playing out the remaining matches, UTA would take the tiebreakers at both No. 1 and No. 5 to earn the sweep on Thursday.
