ARLINGTON, Texas - A perfect sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi helped UTA push its winning streak to five matches on Thursday at the UTA Tennis Center.
UTA (5-1) continued to keep its streak of getting early momentum by taking the doubles point over the Islanders (4-2). The early advantage helped UTA keep its perfect home record through five matches on home court this year and eight dating back to the 2016 season.
"It was a great collective effort," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We played really good doubles and carried the momentum into singles."
All three doubles matches were a race to see who would close it out first for the Mavericks with the teams taking 5-2 leads. Mario Muniesa and Marcos Sanz were able to cross the finish line first with a 6-2 decision at No. 2, while Guanarteme Nuez and Daniel Armengol closed theirs out at 6-3 at No. 3. No. 1 doubles was left unfinished with UTA up 5-2.
Singles played out similarly to the opening point with UTA building an advantage in five of the six matches going in the Mavs' favor in the first set. Marcos Sanz and Jhonathan Gonzalez closed out their match in two sets as Sanz won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win for Gonzalez at No. 3.
The Islanders tilted some momentum their way in two of the remaining singles matches, but it was too little too late with Daniel Armengol closing out the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4.
The match was the start of seven matches at the UTA Tennis Center for the men's and women's teams between Thursday and Sunday. The UTA men are back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. vs. Sacramento State. The Maverick women host a doubleheader on Friday starting at 10 a.m.
