ARLINGTON, Texas - Four seniors celebrated their Senior Day in helping UTA sweep UTSA on Saturday in a Texas Region matchup at UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks (14-7) won their third consecutive home match in the 7-0 result against UTSA. All four senior picked up wins across the board.
"It was just a great match for us against UTSA," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "UTSA is a very good team. The score doesn't show how close the match really was. I am very proud of the seniors. They all won today, so it was the perfect script and they couldn't write it a better way. A lot of them were down and they fought trough adversity and decided that today wasn't the day they would lose.
"There is still a lot of tennis to be played and we are looking forward to hosting Texas Tech here. They are taking this win with a lot of pride and then we can carry the momentum into New Orleans."
The doubles point proved tough as the Mavericks had to pick up a win at No. 1 to clinch the result. UTA grabbed wins from Daniel Armengol and Guanrteme Nuez (6-2) at No. 3, while Jhonathan Gonzalez joined with Mauricio Del Rio to take No. 1 6-3.
Gonzalez and Nuez were the lone Mavs to take straight-set wins in singles as UTSA didn't go quietly. Armengol battled back from dropping his first set to take No. 4 singles. Del Rio and Pablo Colvee each split the first two sets and won a third-set tiebreak.
UTA finishes off the regular season on April 13 when it hosts Texas Tech at the UTA Tennis Center at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
