No. 51 SMU TOPS TEXAS-ARLINGTON 6-1 IN MEN'S TENNIS ACTION

DALLAS, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington's Sandy Farquharson defeated Peter Oredsson of SMU 6-3, 6-3, but that was UTA's lone victory as the No. 51 Mustangs went on to defeat Texas-Arlington 6-1 in a non-conference men's tennis match in Dallas Wednesday. The loss dropped UTA's record to 10-9 overall, while SMU improved to 13-9 this season.
Farquharson's victory, which came at the No. 5 singles position, was the lone bright spot for UTA on the afternoon. Only Javier Carrillo and Ian Vazquez were able to take their matches into a third set. UTA's David Corrie and Nathan McGregor were each facing nationally ranked singles opponents. Corrie was forced to retire early with an injury, trailing No. 87 Gwinyai Chingoka 7-6, 6-5 when the match ended. McGregor fell victim to No. 72 Johan Brunstrom 6-3, 7-5. In the No. 3 singles position, Ryan Mauck stopped Carrillo 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Henrik Soderberg stopped Niels Buksik 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth position and Eric Cohn defeated Ian Vazquez 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot.
In doubles action, Cohn and Mauck defeated McGregor and Farquharson 8-4 in the No. 1 position, while the 43rd ranked team of Brunstrom and Soderberg defeated Corrie and Buksik 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Chingoka and Oredsson handed Carrillo and Alon Goldshuv an 8-4 loss.
UTA returns to action this Saturday at 10 a.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the UTA Tennis Center. Admission is free.
