NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana -- UT Arlington advances to the Sun Belt Conference semifinals after a 4-1 win over Troy Friday Night at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.
The Mavericks took an early leading winning the doubles point. No. 60 Carlos Arbiza and Javier Perez won the first doubles match for the Mavericks 8-4 at the No. 1 spot. No. 3 doubles Daniel Armengol and Mario Muniesa came back to win 8-5 after being down 5-4 against Gabriel Sciacca Dias and Daniel Bustamante.
"The guys played a very high level of singles and doubles today," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "I'm proud of our captain, Carlos, who stepped up and clinched for us."
Sophomore Marek Pesicka lost in straight sets at the No. 1 position as the Trojans tied the match 1-1. Freshman Francesco Migliano defeated Troy's Mansingh Athare 6-2, 6-1 to regain the lead for UT Arlington 2-1. Fellow freshman Muniesa defeated Tommy Cundy as the Mavericks went up 3-1.
Sophomore Carlos Arbiza also won in straight sets as he took down his Troy opponent 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the victory for UT Arlington.
The Mavericks take on No. 1-seeded UL Lafayette Saturday 3 p.m.
