COLLEGE STATION, Texas - UTA wrapped up the fall season on Sunday at the ITA Texas Regional hosted by Texas A&M. Eduard Simo highlighted the Mavericks' stay in college station, reaching the consolation bracket semi final.
After falling in a hard-fought opener in the Round of 128, Simo battled back through the consolation bracket. The freshman picked up wins against opponents from Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian and Lamar.
"Overall it was a good weekend for the guys," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "The ITA Regionals are always tough against great competition. We had a good fall semester and have things to work on for when the spring schedule starts in February."
The tandem of Guanarteme Nuez and Mauricio Del Rio also made a run in the consolation bracket, playing a strong singles game throughout. The top Maverick squad picked up wins over Abilene Christian and Texas Tech before having to withdraw for the semifinal.
In singles, Nuez entered as a seeded player, earning a bye in the first round. He then defeated Koby Jansen of UTRGV in the Round of 64, Rodrigo Banzer, the No. 8 seed from Texas in the Round of 32, before falling in the Round of 16 from a seeded opponent from Abilene Christian.
Del Rio would pick up the only other main draw win in singles, winning his opener over SMU.
The 2018 spring slate will be released in the coming weeks. Admission to all UTA home tennis matches is free.
