ARLINGTON, Texas – The men's tennis team welcomes back five returners from the 2011-12 squad, including three consistent lineup players and four newcomers.
“I am relying on those two to be the leaders of the team,” UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. “They will be leading the pack.”
Yakauleu is the only four-year player on the roster, and has continued to complete and play well for UTA.
“Yauheni has shown tremendous development in every area and has been able to take charge as captain,” Benitez said.
“I feel very comfortable with the freshman class because Sebastian and Carlos both did very well in the Fall and won some big matches,” Benitez said.
That goes for all the underclassmen.
“I’m feeling good about the maturity level because I feel that’s important,” Benitez said. “Even though we only have two seniors, the level of maturity is high and that’s very important when we are trying to accomplish certain objectives.”
The Mavericks recently added new players for the Spring semester, including with Marek Pesicka.
“We have been working a lot with doubles, trying to see what kind of new teams we can put together," Benitez said. "We’ve also been playing matches because once Friday begins the season is nonstop.”
The schedule includes matches against Baylor and Texas. The 2013 campaign begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. at TCU in Fort Worth.
“We try to mix our schedule,” Benitez said. "You have to beat ranked teams to be ranked and that’s our goal.”
