Beaumont, Texas - With UT Arlington and Lamar University even at 3-3, the deciding match point was in the hands of sophomore Brieuc Hamon who battled his way to a hard-fought three-set victory, clinching the Mavs first conference win of the season.
UTA improved their overall record to 3-3 and 1-0 in league play while Lamar fell to 4-5 and 0-1 in SLC action.
"I was very pleased with the guy's performance against Lamar," said head men's tennis coach Diego Benitez. "It was a very hard match but they kept fighting and stayed focus until they reached their goals. I'm very happy with Brieuc sticking with his game plan and clinching the match in a highly pressure situation."
The Mavericks began the afternoon with doubles' competition, falling in two matches and losing the doubles' point.
Collecting their sixth consecutive doubles' victory in the No. 1 position was freshman Mindaugas Celedinas and senior Dmitry Minkin. The tandem posted an 8-6 victory against Maciej Bogusz and Marton Horvath.
Falling in the No. 2 spot in the rotation was freshman Adam Srkala and Hamon against Richard Filkuka and Dusan Savkovic by a final score of 6-8. David Subirats and Gonzalo Bienzobas dropped the No. 3 match against Mario Janjic and Diego Snyder with a final score of 6-8.
With UTA down 1-0 to the Cardinals, the Mavericks stepped up their game, capturing four of six singles' matches.
Newcomer Celedinas improved to 5-1 with a dominating 6-4, 6-4 win over Janjic playing in the No. 1 singles' position. Minkin recorded his fourth singles' win of the season, after defeating Horvath by a final score of 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
Srkala and Lateko made the game tight, falling in both of their singles' matches. Srkala suffered a 2-6, 4-6 setback against Filkuka in the No. 4 spot while Lateko dropped a 5-7, 5-7 decision to Snyder in the No. 5 position.
Junior Bienzobas posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dusan Savkovic in the No. 6 position, knotting the Mavericks and Cardinals at 3-3.
All eyes were on the three-set match going on between Hamon and Bogusz, where the winner would decide the final outcome. In grand fashion, Hamon recorded a hard-fought 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4 victory in the No. 2 position.
UT Arlington will take a short break from conference action, when they travel to Wichita, Kan. for a meeting with Wichita State on Friday, February 27. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
