NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - UT Arlington sophomore Carlos Arbiza has been named Athlete of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference announced Wednesday.
"I'm very proud of Carlos, he has worked very hard on his game and everything is starting to click," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "He still has so much potential and I'm looking forward to seeing him develop even further."
The Venezuela native has made his way into the ITA rankings in both singles and doubles. Arbiza and senior Javier Perez are ranked No. 49 after defeating TCU's No. 18 doubles duo. Arbiza is No. 125 in singles.
The Mavericks have not had a doubles team ranked since 2005.
Perez is a senior for the Mavericks and although he's excited for the rankings, he wants his whole team to compete well.
"So far we have been playing really good tennis. I'm just happy to help the school and do my part. What matters in the end is UTA," Perez said.
Arbiza highlighted his week with a win in Austin over No. 6 Texas' George Goldhoff (7-5, 6-4), who is ranked No. 32 nationally.
Despite only being a sophomore, Arbiza has found himself in the top half of the lineup with one appearance at the No. 3 position, five at the No. 2 spot and two at the No. 1 position with a 1-1 win-loss split.
"This is the first time I've been ranked and I'm feeling pretty confident now and this is good for the team. We all know we need to keep working hard and we can beat top universities," Arbiza said.
