UTA'S FARQUHARSON NAMED SLC MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
April 1, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington freshman Sandy Farquharson was named the Southland Conference's men's tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced today. The award comes on the heels of the Mavericks' SLC regular season title clinching victory Sunday.
Farquharson, a London, England native, won all three of his singles matches in straight sets and went 2-1 alongside No. 1 doubles teammate Nathan McGregor this past week. Farquharson won two matches on March 28, first defeating Texas-San Antonio's Joe Michael Olfindo 6-4, 6-1 before handing Oral Roberts' Kevin Garlington a 6-1, 6-3 defeat later that day. In the Mavericks' conference championship clinching win over Texas-Pan American, Farquharson defeated the Broncs' Oliver Steil 6-4, 6-2.
The Mavericks won all five of their SLC matches in 2003 to clinch their second straight conference regular season crown. The championship is the sixth in nine years for UTA. Overall this season, UTA owns a 10-5 record in 2003, while Farquharson is 13-7 in singles play this year.
The Mavericks are idle until April 11, when they travel to Wichita State to take on the Shockers at noon.
The Mavericks will take the No. 1 seed into the Southland Conference Tournament April 25-27. UTA is the host institution for the event, which will be played at the UTA Tennis Center.
