NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Freshman Daniel Armengol has been named Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
"Daniel as a key factor for the team with the success we had this past weekend," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "I'm very happy for his. He has worked so hard these last few months and he's only going to get better going forward."
Several Sun Belt Conference matches took place last week as teams prepare for the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships beginning April 17.
Armengol competed at the No. 3 position in each match, sweeping matches against opponents from South Alabama, Southern Illinois and Troy. He won in straight sets against both Sun Belt opponents -- 6-1, 6-5 (3-0) over USA and a 6-1, 6-1 over Troy.
The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships will run from April 17-21 in New Orleans. The championship tournament will take place at the City Park Tennis Center. The women's championship begins on Thursday with one first round match and continues with the quarterfinals on Friday morning, semifinals on Saturday morning and the championship match on Sunday at 10 a.m. The men's tournament begins Friday afternoon with the quarterfinals and continues on Saturday afternoon with the semifinals. The men's championship match takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
