GONZALO BIENZOBAS NAMED MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
April 14, 2009
Frisco, Texas - UT Arlington's Gonzalo Bienzobas has been named the Southland Conference's men's tennis player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday. Bienzobas posted a perfect, 3-0 combined record in singles and doubles play in the team's matches against SMU on Tuesday and Southeastern Louisiana on Friday. Bienzobas picked up his first victory of the week in doubles against SMU. He teamed up with sophomore Brieuc Hamon collecting a win over Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh 9-8 for the Mavericks' lone victory of the match. Bienzobas and the Mavericks returned to action three days later in a conference matchup against the Lions in Hammond, La. The tandem teamed up for another doubles victory with an impressive, 8-4 decision in the No. 2 matchup against Jan Bezdecka and Guillaume Capovin. Bienzobas followed suit during the singles round, where he again faced Bezdecka and rallied back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Bienzobas is the third UT Arlington men's tennis player to win player of the week honors in 2009. Teammates Mindaugas Celedinas and Hamon won the award on Feb. 10 and March 3, respectively. This week also marks the second time UT Arlington has swept the weekly tennis awards. Maria Martinez-Romer joins Bienzobas as this week's other honoree. Monika Hadvigerova and Celedinas also accomplished the feat on Feb. 10. Honorable mention for this week's men's award goes to Southeastern Louisiana junior Benjamin Enke and UTSA senior Andre Moreira. A student-athlete must receive 25-percent of the votes from the league's SIDs in order to qualify for honorable mention.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
