NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championship bracket has been set with action set to begin from the City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans this Friday. UT Arlington is the fourth seed.
"We've been preparing for the tournament and playing good tennis recently." UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We're going to focus on Troy. We played them not too long ago and we beat them, but it was a battle and it could have gone either way so we just have to be ready."
The men's tournament gets underway Friday afternoon, as the No. 4-seeded Mavericks take on No. 5 Troy at 3 p.m. The championship match will take place Sunday at 2 p.m. All matches will take place on the main courts at the City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans.
"We're relying on that doubles team," Benitez said. "They'll be playing at the top of the lineup and they've been practicing together a lot to get ready for this weekend."
UL Lafayette is No. 64 in the latest ITA Men's Team Rankings and clinched the top seed of the men's tournament. The Ragin' Cajuns enter the tournament riding an eight-match win streak and own an 18-4 overall record. UL Lafayette boasts a deep singles lineup in which six players own double-digit win totals in singles play this spring. The top-seeded Ragin' Cajuns earned a bye in the quarterfinal round and will await the winner of No. 4 seed UT Arlington vs. No. 5 seed Troy.
The other half of the men's bracket features the No. 2-seeded South Alabama which finished the year ranked No. 71 in the ITA National Team Rankings. Senior Daniel Leitner leads the Jaguars with a 15-6 record this spring at the No. 1 singles position.
USA awaits the winner of No. 3 seed Georgia State and No. 6 seed WKU. The Panthers are led by freshman Jannis Koeke, a two-time Sun Belt Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honoree.
Thursday night the Sun Belt Conference will announce its postseason award winners and all-conference honorees at its postseason banquet. A full day of matches is scheduled for Friday with women's quarterfinal round matches slated for 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. with men's quarterfinal round matches beginning at 3 p.m. Women's semifinal matches start at 10 a.m. on Saturday and men's semifinal matches follow at 3 p.m. The championship matches will take place on Sunday with the women's match scheduled for a 10 a.m. first serve and the men's scheduled to follow at 2 p.m.
