ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington men’s tennis team wrapped up its season in the 2013 Western Athletic Conference tournament, losing as the No. 6 seed in the first round.
“They started quite strong and won some good matches defeating Northern Arizona who ended up being a nationally-ranked team,” UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. “We went to California and beat Sacramento State and UC Davis, which are two really good schools.
“We played great at the beginning. We had a really good team and really good freshman. Unfortunately we couldn’t finish strongly when it really counts.”
The Mavericks entered the tournament with a 7-13 overall and 1-5 conference record, but fell to No. 3 seed UTSA in a 4-1 match to be eliminated from the tournament.
The men started their 2013 campaign strong, but fell off when conference play began. UTA featured two seniors with Yauheni Yakauleu and Soren Goritzka. Yakauleu was the team captain and only four-year letter winner for the Mavs.
Despite an early exit from the WAC tournament, Yakauleu and freshman Carlos Arbiza were named second-team all-WAC doubles.
